Styles of Yoga

Hatha Yoga

A traditional system of yoga that includes the practice of postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama). This is generally a gentle form of yoga great for those who like a relaxed style.

Vinyasa Yoga

A form of yoga where movements are synchronized with breath. It's a vigorous style based on a flow through a sequence of postures. If you prefer moving to holding, this is a great style for you.

yin Yoga

A slow-paced form of yoga where poses are held from three - five+ minutes. The purpose is to apply moderate stress to the connective tissue to increase circulation in the joints and improve flexibility.

restorative Yoga

Gentle, relaxing, passive style that allows you to relax and release your body to get a gentle stretch. Props are used to support the body in the poses so you can completely let go of any tensions and stress.

iyengar yoga

Intense focus is placed on the subtleties of each posture. Poses are held much longer than in other forms of yoga to pay close attention to the precise musculoskeletal alignment. Props are used to move into postures.

Kundalini Yoga

Designed to awaken the energy at the base of the spine and draw it up through the seven chakras to the crown. Repeated movements, dynamic breathing techniques, chanting, meditation and mantras are characteristics..

I'm not flexible, can I do yoga?

Yes! You are the perfect person to do yoga. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible as well as strong and agile. Our focus is always on starting where you are, listening to and working with your body and safely moving forward.

Can I Eat Before Class ?

It’s not recommended to eat a big meal before class, as some of the poses may feel uncomfortable with a full belly. Every body is different, and a light snack 30 minutes before class may work for you. To an extent it also depends on the “style / type” of class you’re taking.

How Often Should I Practice?

Ideally, it will be practiced daily. Consistency is key, even if it’s just for a little bit each day, or one longer session a week. Yoga is a cumulative practice so every bit you do will help.

What Do I Need to Begin?

Your body, and a willingness to learn. You do NOT need to know how to do yoga! Wear comfortable clothing you can move it without it being too baggy. It’s nice to have a yoga mat for traction. Props like a yoga strap and block can come in handy, but a belt and book can substitute if needed.

What does "yoga" mean?

To unite the body, mind and spirit.” Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means “to yoke” or “to unite.”  It’s often used to mean the postures or the physical poses. However, yoga moves beyond the poses as we integrate our breath as well as our mind into our practice. The poses are only one of the eight limbs of yoga.

Is Yoga a Religion?

No, it is a philosophy. It does have a spiritual component in that you need to believe in the possibility that we can transform ourselves and that there is always more to learn. It’s about tapping into our highest potential as human beings.
